I get a fair amount of mail about this site, and have tried to collect
together as many of the questions here in order to answer them more
efficiently. This is not intended to be definitive, and many of the
answers are based on my own research and opinions. If you have any
questions (or answers) about the show that you think should be included email
me and when I update I'll include them.
I hope that most of the questions have already been
answered elsewhere in the site, and would like to specify that answers
here relate specifically to the Fox TV show Kindred: The Embraced, and
not to the White Wolf role playing game Vampire: The Masquerade as there
are distinct differences.

1. General questions about
Kindred The Embraced
Contents
1.1: What is Kindred: The Embraced?
Kindred: The Embraced was a TV show, created by John Leekley and made
by Fox that ran in 1996 for 8 episodes.
General
Contents
1.2: What was it about?
Kindred The Embraced was a dark, gothic show revolving around the
vampire society of San Francisco, known as the Kindred.
It concentrated on the leaders of the various clans,
and their loves and political machinations.
General
Contents
1.3: Kindred: The Embraced was a really cool show;
how come it was cancelled?
That's a good one...and the answer is fairly subjective. There were a
number of factors which came into play, and in my opinion all
contributed to the show's early demise.
The show was aimed towards the wrong audience; produced by Spelling
Entertainment it is easy to see why it could be marketed alongside such
shows as Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place, but the subject matter
and level of violence attracted numerous complaints, so much so that the
most disturbing episode, 'Nightstalker', wasn't aired.
The axe fell, and Kindred was consigned to an early grave, though the
initial plan was to continue the story in movie form. Mark Frankel's
death in September of 1996 put a huge dent in that plan. Though from
what I can tell, the show still had a future at this point.
November 1996 put paid to the movie plans. A murder case took America
by storm, and put Vampire: The Masquerade and the horror media firmly in
the spotlight. The Wendorf 'Vampire Murders' were committed by a group
of youths who were heavily into Vampire: The Masquerade, and had adopted
the game's practices as their lifestyle. Let me make this very clear;
these people were not role playing, they had adopted the lifestyle of
'real' vampires. A statement by the Interactive Literature Foundation
can be read by clicking here,
and gives more information that I could.
It was argued by parents that Kindred: The Embraced glamorized and
encouraged the vampiric lifestyle, at a time when Vampire: The
Masquerade was the subject of heated debate. It is my opinion that this
seriously hurt the chances of the shows return.
General
Contents
1.4: So there could still be a movie then?
Highly unlikely, though not impossible but I doubt we'd see the
original cast return now even if the concept were used. I would add that
another John Leekley show, Wolf Lake, also bombed which I think damaged
any remaining chance.
General
Contents
1.5: Didn't the show get cancelled because Mark Frankel
died?
No. The show had already been cancelled. And to clear up another
misconception, no, it wasn't the show's cancellation that caused Mark to
be in London where he was killed. Even if the show had been renewed Mark
would still have been in London during the hiatus. His death was a
tragic accident, but there are no scapegoats.
General
Contents
1.6: Is the show available on video or DVD, and if so where
can I buy it?
If you're in the US you may be in luck, as the Kindred: The Embraced
box set was released on NTSC VHS video and region 1 DVD. The series was
also released in Germany as Clan De Vampire in PAL format. You can purchase the series through Amazon, and
can often find bargains on EBay and various auction sites. If you're
prepared to look, you will probably find them. Outside of the US though,
you're probably going to have to rely on reruns.
General
Contents
1.7: Isn't it based on a book?
Yes it is. 'The Book of the Kindred' by Mark Rein-Hagen. It was
published by White Wolf in 1989, and on occasion can be found through
Amazon. Mark Rein-Hagen also wrote or contributed to many of the White
Wolf Role Playing system rule and source books.

1.8: So Kindred: The Embraced and Vampire:
The Masquerade are the same?
NO! You can never say that!! Kindred: The Embraced was loosely based
on Vampire: The Masquerade, but has it's own take on the game's world.
There are many differences (some might say inconsistencies, or even
cock-ups) in Kindred that would never appear in the game. Let's just say
they're different, and leave it at that:)
General
Contents
1.9: Tell me more about Vampire: The Masquerade?
No, I won't but if you click here
it will take you to a Google search, and there are so many other people who are
just dying to tell you all about it!

1.10: The music used in the
show was great, is there a
soundtrack?
There is no sound track, but some of the music you heard is available
on CD, though some may be harder to track down than others. The albums
are: Leonard Cohen - 'The Future', Alannah Myles -
'Alannah', Enya - 'Paint the Sky With Stars: The Best of Enya' and the
Charlie Sexton Sextet - 'Under the Wishing Tree'. In Live Hard, Die
Young... the song 'Zane' sings is called 'Everyone Will Crawl' on
the afore mentioned Charlie Sexton Sextet album.

1.11: I've heard the videos
and the DVD's are different; in
what ways?
I've only seen the video versions, but I am aware of the differences
in the Pilot episode. The video contains the funeral of Julian's last living
Grandson, August Octavia, where Sasha makes her first appearance. The DVD does not have this scene, and instead
the conclave scene, where the bloodhunt
for Alexandra is declared, is extended to include the Primogens
kissing Julian's hand as a sign of their loyalty. Julian also gives
Eddie a stern warning about interfering in Kindred
businesses. Also in the DVD version there is an additional, final scene
where the camera goes underneath the water of San Francisco Bay to
Alexandra's body. Her eyes open, and the scene cuts to the rose garden.
Among the dead bushes a single red rose blooms.

1.12:
There was another episode written, wasn't there?
What was it about?
The first episode of the second season was apparently written, called
Skull. The only clues on what it was about were given by John Leekley in
a live AOL chat (you can read the full transcript by clicking here).
Here is the relevant part (all original spelling preserved):
John Leekley: In "Skull", all of the characters including Julian are exposed to a skull that has been found in Ethiopia, found by a biologist to be a missing link between man and apes. But the skull turns out to be the missing link between man and kindred, the first
Nosferatu. Along with the other characters, Julian is nearly driven mad, because he reverts to the far more savaged apes. He wakes up in the morning with Kateland, and blood on his pillow, fearing he will harm her. Thus begins the second season, he goes back to Lilly.
[...] The second season begins with a umber of conflicts. Kateland is also aware of the existence vampires, but still doesn't know Julian is one of them.

Contents
2.1: When will you add [...] to the site?
It has always been my intention to add as much original content as
possible to the site as I can, but this does take time. If there's
something in particular you think is missing, tell me and I'll consider
adding it if it's within my capabilities.
The Site
Contents
2.2: Can I use your content on my site?
No, you may not use material from this site and upload or
redistribute it in any other manner without my express permission. If
there is something here that you would like to use email
me and ask me. I will consider all requests, and usually give permission
for use as long as full credit and a link back is given. I will protect
the site and content vigorously should permission not be
requested.
The Site
Contents
2.3: Will you ever finish this site?
Another good question, and the answer is I don't know. I've been
working on this site in it's many forms for upwards of two years now,
and I still have ideas I want to implement. It's come a long way from
the picture gallery I first intended, that's for sure!
The Site
Contents
2.4: Can I link to your site?
Of course! At some point I'll design one of those nifty little banner
things, but in the meantime you can link to http://www.kindred.me.uk/
I would ask that you please not link to internal pages unless you
really have to. Many of the galleries etc. move from time to time as
server space allows.
Hot linking to content directly is absolutely not permitted, and any
abnormal activity will be blocked and reported. Bandwidth is precious,
and expensive, please respect that.
The Site
Contents
2.5: I have a Kindred/Cast site, will you link to it?
If you have a site that you'd like included in my links section email
me and let me know. However, I don't link to any sites with adult
content, including (but not limited to) fan fiction, media or images.
This is to comply with the terms of my host, and also to make this site
as user friendly as possible.
The Site
Contents
2.6: I book-marked a page and it's gone, where is it?
The chances are you book marked a picture gallery. These get moved
from time to time. Also it's to prevent hot-linking from other
unscrupulous web masters/mistresses. It could also be that I got bored
and decided to rearrange things and make them easier to manage.
The Site
Contents
2.7: Is this your only site?
No, I have a bunch of different sites dedicated to all kinds of
things. A
Blithe Spirit - my home page, Blithe's
First Wave Site - newish site dedicated to the Sci-Fi show First
Wave, Blithe's
Breakfast Club Site - site dedicated to the pivotal '80's movie, Blithe's
Channon Roe Site - dedicated to the Kindred actor and Ventrescaholics
Anonymous - A site dedicated to Vincent Ventresca that I share with
one of my best friends. Check them out if you like it here, and there
are bound to be more as time goes on. They all get thrown into one big
site called Blitheweb,
which is basically to all my personal and professional sites.
The Site

2.8: How frequently do you update?
I go through phases. Sometimes I update daily, and sometimes I can go
weeks or even months without adding something. I try to do things when
I'm in the mood so that it stays fun. I'm usually working on something
though. To see just what I'm doing I have a mailing list for updates on
all my sites. You can join it by clicking here
and following the instructions.
The Site

2.10: Will you add
transcripts of the show?
This is something I'm considering, but sitting and making transcripts
is going to be a long and arduous process. Deciphering some of the
dialogue will also be tough, but one day I'll give it a go and see if
it's something I think I can do justice to.

2.10:
Where did you get the artwork for your site?
I created all the artwork you see here specifically for the site. The
backgrounds I scanned from various sources, most notably from the
Vampire: The Masquerade RPG books. Most of the pictures are by Tim
Bradstreet. They were painstakingly edited
and manipulated until they were right for this site. All the site ornaments
were designed and created for this site by me, and may not be used elsewhere.
Please respect the amount of work it took, and don't steal them.

there have been oversights. Email

3.4: I heard that Mark Frankel died, is it true?
Sadly yes, Mark Frankel was killed in a motorcycle accident on
September 24th 1996. He collided with a lorry whilst riding his pride
and joy, a customised yellow Harley, and died later in hospital from his
injuries. He left behind his son Fabian, and wife Caroline, who was
pregnant with their second child at the time of the accident.

4.6: The Haven
Lillie Langtry's club, and the hub of San Francisco's vampire
community. Named because it offers a safe haven for all Kindred, though
it doesn't always appear that way.
"A lot of lost souls drift through this place Frank. That's why
I call it The Haven."
(Lillie Langtry - Live Hard, Die Young and Leave a Good Looking Corpse)
Glossary

4.7: Clans
The Kindred are separated into groups, each descended from different
bloodlines, and these groups are known as Clans. Each clan has its own distinguishing
characteristics (described below), rivalries and allegiances.
"Ten years ago there was a war between the clans. The Gangrels and the Toreador made peace. But the Brujah wanted power...so I had to fight"
(Julian Luna - Cabin in the Woods)
Glossary
Contents
4.8: Ventrue Clan
The Ventrue are the leaders and aristocrats of Kindred society; the
traditional stereotypical vampire. They are the law-makers and
enforcers.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Ventrue are Julian Luna, Archon Raine,
Sonny Toussaint and Alexandra Serris.
"Ventrue are bankers and politicians, suits with sharp teeth. How could he understand? The only thing he knows is power, and control."
(Zane - Live Hard, Die Young and Leave a Good Looking Corpse)
"We allowed the Ventrue to live above ground, to become bankers and politicians so that we could maintain power."
(Goth - Bad Moon Rising)

4.9: Nosferatu
Clan
The Nosferatu are bald, deformed creatures cursed to live in the
shadows away from humans as their appearance prevents them blending in.
They are the oldest and strongest of the Kindred, they also have learned
the secrets of alchemy. They remain strong by staying out of trouble,
and don't involve themselves in the affairs of the other clans.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Nosferatu clan are Daedalus, Goth and
Camilla.
"The Nosferatu will not involve themselves in war. The whole
stinking bunch of them will stay in the shadows and watch...while we
kill each other."
(Eddie Fiori - Romeo and Juliet)
"From the time of the Inquisition, we were hunted down, tortured, burned alive by humans who feared us, who called us monsters. When the Nosferatu joined with the other Clans to maintain the Masquerade we were able to live peacefully out of sight of humans, below ground."
(Daedalus - Bad Moon Rising)
"We're not crusaders, that's how we've survived five thousand
years."
(Daedalus - Romeo and Juliet)

4.10: Toreador Clan
The Toreador are the artist and musicians of the Kindred. They have a
powerful sexual magnetism that human and Kindred alike find hard to
resist. They use their charisma and manipulative powers to get their own
way rather than force.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Toreador clan are Lillie Langtry, Zane,
Grace Dugan and Riannon.
"You have all the beauty of the Toreador clan, but you're as
relentless as the Nosferatu."
(Julian Luna - Prince of the City)
"You know they say that women from the Toreador clan are
dangerous. That they're sirens. They have the power to make men want
them, beyond reason."
"Julian Luna - Prince of the City)
"I replaced his blood with mine. The real music was just locked
up inside of him. Now look at him...pure Toreador."
(Lillie Langtry - Live Hard, Die Young and Leave a Good Looking Corpse)
"Julian doesn't understand us Lillie...we are Toreador. Music was created by us!. Before us, music didn't exist"

"We're the sexy ones. We like to entertain."
(Lillie Langtry - Prince of the City)

4.11: Brujah
Clan
The Brujah are the seedy underbelly of Kindred society. They refuse
to abide by Kindred Law, and crave money and power. They are the Mafia
of the Kindred world. They see what they want and take it by force.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Brujah clan are Eddie Fiori, Sasha,
Cameron, Cyrus, Nino Donelli, Paul 'Pauley' Boyle, Bate and
Sorrel.
"The Brujah never listen to reason. They only understand carnage."
(Daedalus - Pilot)
"Eddie Fiori was brutal and stupid. I am neither of those things. I would advise you to stop hunting Brujah, or I will hunt you...in your apartment, on the street...I will find you...and end your life...like
that!"
(Cameron - Cabin in the Woods)
"Brujah are scum."
(Cash - Romeo and Juliet)
"...and now you're Brujah clan...my enemies."
(Cash - Romeo and Juliet)
"You have the Brujah blood in you, which is full of
anger...especially towards the Gangrel."
(Lillie Langtry - The Rise and Fall of Eddie Fiori)

4.12: Gangrel
Clan
The Gangrel clan are tight-knit, with rebellious gypsy blood running
through their veins. It is their loyalty that makes them strong, and
what makes them ideal bodyguards to the Prince.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Gangrel clan are Cash, Stevie-Ray,
Starkweather, Lorraina and Billy (this is my opinion, though many
believe Billy to be Ventrue).
"Gangrels are always fighting amongst themselves. They're like
animals."
(Eddie Fiori - Pilot))
"They're just your enforcers. Gangbangers with guns!"
(Eddie Fiori - Pilot)
"I am looking to bring a new man into security. I want a Gangrel. Someone I can trust and can't be bought. Like Stevie."
(Julian Luna - Pilot)
"I'm from gypsy blood. We stick close together."
(Cash - Prince of the City)
"Gangrels are animals and gypsies. They recognise no
authority."
(Eddie Fiori - Pilot)

4.13: Assamite Clan
The Assamite clan are a secretive group of assassins and shapeshifters
who work only for Princes. They are relentless, and once charged with a
task can't be called back.
In Kindred the Embraced the Assamite clan was Marissa
"Amazing thing about Assamites. They're chameleons. They can shapeshift into anything, did you know that?
They're deadly. Not because they're stronger, not because they got bigger guns, none of that stuff. They get close. They can be your mother, your brother, your lover. Or even some broad you picked up at the bar."
(Cyrus - The Rise and Fall of Eddie Fiori)
"No one knows where they come from. But remember this; Once you send them in, you can't call them back. No one can."
(Cyrus - The Rise and Fall of Eddie Fiori)

Contents
4.14: Prince
In Kindred the Embraced the title Prince is given to the absolute
leader of a city. In San Francisco Julian Luna is Prince, having
inherited the title from Archon Raine. In Los Angeles Cyrus is Prince.
The title is much coveted by those power-hungry and often reckless
Kindred who wish to dethrone him and take his place. Although the Prince
is a dictator, making and enforcing laws tailored to his own regime, he
is assisted by the conclave.
"I am the Prince of the city. You have violated my laws."
(Julian Luna - Nightstalker)
"Take LA. I'm on top because business in that city is business, regardless of human law. Eddie here just suggests that San Francisco could use a
similar...leadership approach?"
(Cyrus - The Rise and Fall of Eddie Fiori)
"I was Prince of the City for a very long time, Gangrel. I think I know how to control the clans."
(Archon Raine - Cabin in the Woods)
"Everyone, the Prince has spoken. I had better run before he has
my head!"
(Zane - Live Hard, Die Young and Leave a Good Looking Corpse)

Contents
4.15: Primogen
Each clan within the city has a leader, know as the Primogen. They
are responsible for keeping the laws within the clans in much the same
way as the Prince does within the city. In addition the Primogen act as
advisors to the Prince, and speak on behalf of their clans at the
Conclave.
In Kindred: The Embraced the Primogen are Lillie Langtry, Cash, Eddie
Fiori (who was succeeded by Cameron), Archon Raine and Daedalus.
"My name is Cameron. I'm the new Primogen of the Brujah, I understand you know what that means?"
(Cameron - Cabin in the Woods)
"Your Promogen is dead. You have to choose another. I'll honour
any choice you make, but choose carefully."
(Julian Luna - The Rise and Fall of Eddie Fiori)

4.16: Conclave
The Conclave is a meeting of the Primogen and Prince. Although it
seems he is under no obligation to do so, Julian allows many decisions
that affect the city to be put to the vote of the Conclave and abides by
their decision even when it is at odds with his own desires.
"This is a meeting of the Primogen, is it not?"
(Cameron - Cabin in the Woods)
"I want this conclave to know, that it has my respect. I put my life in your hands, if the killing of Archon was unjust...say so. And I will surrender to you Julian. Then unless, you want to overrule your Primogen...I am free of blame."
(Cameron - Cabin in the Woods)

4.17: Bloodhunt
When Kindred are found to have broken Kindred Laws they are sentenced
to final death. The Bloodhunt is called, whereby the guilty vampire is
hunted down and their blood is drained in order to strengthen other Kindred.
"I declare a Bloodhunt for Alexandra Serris for breaking the commandment
of our Masquerade. She will be hunted down and destroyed, her blood used
to strengthen us."
(Julian Luna - Pilot)

4.18: Sire
The Kindred who gives their blood to a human in order to make them a
vampire during an Embrace. The role of the Sire is that of a father, and
in many cases the bond is similarly strong.
NOTE: Sire is also a for of address to a royal male. When Billy says
"Yes sire" to Julian, it is, in my opinion, used in this way.
"I lead by the law, Brujah. That's the only reason you live. Just remember: Kindred law's harsh. Step wrong even once, and you'll get the same justice you gave my sire."
(Julian Luna - Cabin in the Woods)
"You know, Lillie, if you hadn't been the one who sired him, I'd have killed him by now."
(Julian Luna - Live Hard, Die Young, and Leave a Good Looking Corpse)
"Stevie-Ray was my sire. He sired all of us."
(Cash - Pilot)
"I sired him that's true...but your a Prince, Julian, you know how it is. Sometimes, you have to give up the ones you love"

Alchemy
Alchemy is what the Kindred call magic and spells. This is used by
Daedalus when he creates a potion to show his true face to Elaine Robb,
and when he imbues Julian with Nosferatu powers in order to fight Goth.
"Daedalus, alchemy can be dangerous. Some things are not meant
to be changed."
